SATA Ready! USB 2.0 (may need bios updated when you recieve it)Ĭons: No Restore disk, No way to make one. Lots of USB Ports, including two on the front. Those upgraded were in my mind essential, and She is very happy! (me too) She loved it and it made me look like the son she always wanted to have :) seriously. I then felt secure enough to give it to my mother for Xmas.
I then installed my own Windows Xp pro and made a proper restore disk with Nero. I upggraded the ram with two 512Mb sticks, and installed Dvd RW. I Upgraded the Hd to a WD Raptor 74Gb, and put the old Hd aside. This machine has a 400Mhz Fsb and a P 2.4Ghz.
Pros: Booted right up, No fuss No Muss! Free shipping and Low cost. I conencted this machine to a home network so I added "IRPStackSize" to the Registry. > Order additional memory (with the same timing) from Newegg > Run CPU-Z - determine the timing for the installed memory > Intall Eset NOD 32 - connect to internet > Uninstall the pre-loaded anti virus program - then run the N*rt*n removal tool > Follow on screen instructions to set up XP - do not activate XP at this time > Power up - if it doesn't work, exchange it > Upon delivery open the case, check for solid connections, connect monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers - do not connect to internet
> While waiting for delivery, download IBM manuals, Eset intallation instructions, the N*rt*n removal tool, and a very useful utility called "CPU-Z" Overall Review: Here's what I did to prepare for and to set up this computer.
Internal power and IDE cabling has to be re-routed in order to install additional memory.
Common wisdom is that this key was deleted by the pre-installed anti-virus software. The Registry Key "IRPStackSize" was missing. The USB mouse did not come with a USB/PS2 adaptor. It could be a problem in some installations.
The cord on the PS2 keyboard is very short. The prices for both were teriffic and Newegg's free shipping made for an incredible deal.Ĭons: I don't really have any cons - but I do have a few observations that might prove useful.
I bought this machine and an OEM copy of Eset NOD 32 from a Newegg e-mail promo. It is solid, quiet, and comes with Windows XP Pro. However, it booted up and ran perfectly right out of the box. The one I received had a few scratches, one missing foot, and was a bit dusty inside. Pros: Buying a recertified computer involves some risk so it's best to control your expectations. I'm really hoping this was just an oversight by the Quality Assurance department at the factory/warehouse. I would have sent the whole thing back to Newegg but it's too close to Christmas and this purchase was intended as a gift of a first computer for a underprivileged child. Compressed air from a can of cleaning duster simply couldn't do the job. I ended up stripping the computer down and cleaning it, piece by piece, with alcohol, Q-tips, and cleaning cloths. Newegg should either remove this item from its inventory or thoroughly recondition each unit before shipping. I was totally shocked and extremely disappointed. I've been doing business with Newegg for years and I've never seen anything like this. I couldn't believe what I was seeing as I opened the box and examined this item. Overall Review: Newegg needs to add a sixth egg (rotten egg) to its 5-egg rating. Instead of 2 sticks (as pictured in the photos) of 256MB PC2700 memory (PC2700 based on the CPU's 533MHz FSB and IBM's manufacturer specs) to utilize the motherboard's BUS and Dual Channel capability, there was only 1 stick of 512MB PC2100 RAM installed. The hardware included was as advertised except for the memory. And there was this awful odor inside the case that I can't describe here. It appears the case was opened at the warehouse, the CPU fan was replaced, and the case was closed. The computer was absolutely filthy inside. There were several scratches on the case that appeared to be covered with a black magic marker. The rear I/O panel, vent, power supply, and area around the expansion slots were dirty too. The exterior of the computer was dirty especially dirty around the drive bays and USB ports. Pros: Windows XP (SP1) was pre-installed.Ĭons: Before making this purchase, I thoroughly read the FAQ titled "What are Recertified products?" This item was not as described.
